Homeowner Education

What every homeowner should know

Understanding your home's electrical system helps you stay safe and make smarter decisions. Here are the essentials.

1

Your Panel Is the Heart of Your System

Your electrical panel distributes power to every circuit in your home. If it is undersized, outdated, or a recalled brand (Federal Pacific, Zinsco), it cannot safely handle modern electrical loads. A 200A panel is the current standard for most Ontario homes.

2

GFCI Outlets Save Lives

Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter outlets detect current leaks and shut off power in milliseconds. Ontario code requires them in kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, garages, and outdoor areas. If your home lacks GFCI protection in these areas, it is both a safety risk and a code issue.

3

Aluminum Wiring Needs Attention

Homes built between 1965 and 1978 in Ontario may have aluminum branch wiring, which is linked to a higher fire risk at connection points. It does not always need to be replaced, but it does need to be inspected and properly terminated by a licensed electrician.

4

Permits Exist to Protect You

ESA permits and inspections are not red tape. They are your proof that the work was done safely and to code. Un-permitted work can void your insurance, complicate a home sale, and put your family at risk. We pull permits on every job that requires one.

5

Flickering Lights Are Not Normal

Occasional flickers during a storm are expected. Persistent flickering, dimming when appliances kick on, or lights that buzz usually point to loose connections, overloaded circuits, or failing components. These are warning signs that should be investigated promptly.

6

Smoke Detectors Have a Lifespan

Smoke detectors should be replaced every 10 years, and CO detectors every 7 years, regardless of whether they still beep when tested. Hardwired, interconnected detectors with battery backup are the safest option and are now required by the Ontario Building Code.

Common Questions

Electrical FAQ

Straight answers to the questions homeowners ask most about electrical work, permits, and pricing.

Do I need a permit for electrical work?

In Ontario, most electrical work beyond simple like-for-like replacements requires an ESA permit. This includes adding circuits, upgrading panels, installing pot lights, and running new wiring. We pull the permit, schedule the inspection, and hand you the certificate.

How much does a panel upgrade cost?

A 100A to 200A panel upgrade typically ranges from $3,500 to $5,500 depending on your home's wiring, the panel location, and any additional work required. We provide a fixed, written quote before starting — no surprises.

Is my aluminum wiring dangerous?

Aluminum wiring itself is not inherently dangerous, but the connections can overheat over time if not properly terminated. We inspect aluminum wiring connections and can install approved connectors (such as AlumiConn or COPALUM) to make them safe without a full rewire.

Can you install an EV charger at my home?

Yes. We install Level 2 (240V) EV chargers for all major brands. This typically requires a dedicated 40A or 50A circuit from your panel. If your panel needs an upgrade to accommodate the charger, we handle that too — one project, one team.

How long does a typical electrical job take?

Outlet and switch work usually takes 1-2 hours. Lighting installations typically take half a day. Panel upgrades are a full-day job. We give you an estimated timeline along with the quote so you can plan accordingly.

Do you offer emergency electrical service?

Yes. If you have a power outage, exposed wiring, burning smell from an outlet, or any situation that feels unsafe, call us immediately. We offer same-day emergency response across the GTA. Your safety does not wait until Monday.

What areas do you serve?

We serve Toronto, Markham, Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Mississauga, Oakville, Burlington, Hamilton, Oshawa, Ajax, Pickering, Whitby, and 28+ communities across the GTA and Southern Ontario.

What if I am not happy with the work?

Every electrical job is backed by our 100% satisfaction guarantee in writing. If something is not right, we come back and fix it at no extra charge. We would rather absorb the cost than lose your trust.
